Features of HDI PCB in its design and manufacturing
Compared with conventional PCBs, HDI PCBs have thinner lines, smaller holes and higher density, thus it is helpful for chips with many pins in mobile devices and other high-tech products.
The differences between HDI PCB and traditional PCB
HDI PCB combines dense component placement and finer circuits, using fewer circuit boards without affecting its functionality. The main difference between HDI PCBs and other traditional PCBs is that the former are interconnected through blind and buried vias instead of through holes.
HDI PCB uses laser drilling, while traditional PCB uses mechanical drilling. Compared with the traditional PCB plate, the apertures of vias in HDI PCB is smaller, with the aperture ranging from 3.0 to 6.0 mils, which can save more space for pads and form a better layout per unit area.
Advantages of HDI PCB
1. Compact design
The combination of micro vias, blind via PCB and buried via PCB greatly reduces the board space. With the support of HDI technology, the standard 8-layer through-hole PCB can be simplified to 4-layer HDI PCB with the same function.
2. Excellent signal integrity
With a smaller through hole, all stray capacitance and inductance will be reduced. The combination of binding vias and pad vias helps to shorten the length of the signal path, which will lead to faster signal transmission and better signal quality.
3. High reliability
HDI technology makes wiring and connection easier, and provides better durability and reliability for PCB in dangerous and extreme environment.
4. Cost effective
If traditional pressing process is used, more manufacturing cost will be needed when the circuit board has more than 8 layers. But HDI technology can reduce costs and maintain functions.
Applications of HDI PCB
HDI PCB has been widely used to reduce the overall size and weight of the final product, while enhancing its electrical performance. For medical devices such as pacemakers, small cameras and implants, only HDI technology can provide them with small packages with fast transmission rates. Thus, HDI PCB is used in automotive equipment, military and aerospace equipment, and smaller portable products such as smartphones, tablets and wearable electronics.
